Introducing our new Trustee - Andrew Mercer
I was born in Charlton, South London. Close to the football club (the Addicks) that my grandfather helped to build from a school mission.
I was educated at Eltham College in South London and soon after leaving school, (at a very young age) qualified as an accountant. After various jobs with American corporations, I started on an entrepreneurial journey that has continued for the last 30 years. From software to renewable energy and more recently data centres.
I have 4 children. Simon, Jessie, Sarah and Katie, and live with my partner Christine in Bath. I enjoy sailboat racing, Bath Rugby and gardening!
I have been interested in the manner that education and its relationship with government (local and central) has developed. Mostly in shock and dismay at its dismantling. It is going to get more challenging.
I have a passion for doing things in a world-class manner, believing that most things have been done before and we can all learn from the best. I am not an educationalist but believe that every child should be given an equal chance to do well, based upon a world class education. Covid 19 has taught us (reminded us) the need for compassion for the vulnerable and the capacity as a community to step up when needed. It is this community (beyond the parents) that needs to be re engaged with our schools. I believe that we should engage with our business and high net worth’s in our communities and get them to re-engage with “their school”.
I am excited at the opportunity presented by the partnership as a MAT Board Trustee, and hope I can be part of what is an already emerging world class blue print for the future of schooling, helping the children and staff across the partnership and the country.
